Coast1Portugal scooped several of the leading accolades at the World Travel Awards Europe gala, including being listed as the continent’s top destination.

As well as being the leading destination, Madeira was named as Europe’s best island hot-spot, while the Algarve won the award for the finest beach on the continent.

Around €5.5 million has been spent on turning Ireland’s former prison – which was once the largest convict depot in the world – into a tourist attraction, and it now welcomes thousands of visitors a month.

Within the hotel category, Ciragan Palace Kempinski in Istanbul was named as Europe’s leading hotel again, whilst The Peninsula in Paris took the crown for the best luxury hotel.

For British travellers looking to travel between Europe and Asia, British Airways looks to be your best bet as it was named as the best carrier, whilst KLM-Royal Dutch Airlines received the award for routes between Europe and the US or Canada.

The World Travel Awards, which are now in their 24th year, will name the global winners at a final gala event in Vietnam on 10 December.
