Bulgarian capital represents best value for autumn travellers

Bulgaria1Sofia offers the best value for travellers looking for a bargain break this autumn, as costs have dropped by 39% already this year.

Research from TravelSupermarket shows that the Bulgarian capital and Warsaw in Poland offer travellers the most for their money when it comes to the top 20 cheapest overseas breaks.

The study looked at the cost of two nights of hotel accommodation and a return flight to the UK to rank the cheapest destinations for British travellers.

Brussels was the cheapest last year, with the cost adding up to just £90 per person, however the price of a visit to Sofia came in at just under £70 – a drop of 30% on last year.

More popular destinations, including Venice, Geneva and Lisbon, all made the top ten list last year, however they were found to be much more expensive this year.

Cities like Naples and Cologne now feature, with a short break dropping by 39% and 35% respectively, from last year.

Eastern European cities make up a quarter of the top 20 places, while other destinations to make the list include Krakow, Milan, Berlin, Nice and Disneyland Paris.

TravelSupermarket Travel Expert Emma Coulthurst believes the data shows that a winter city break can be a cost effective option for British traveller’s eager to enjoy a holiday.

“It is great news that if you know where to go, a bargain break to use up your last bits of leave does not have to cost the earth and is in fact, for many destinations, loads cheaper than if you’d gone last year,” she explained.

A major reason for the drop in the cost of a city break is that competition between both airlines and destinations has grown in recent years, benefitting travellers looking for a bargain.

If you’re thinking of travelling abroad this year, be sure to organise your European Travel Insurance in advance.
