UK airports reveal record-breaking summer passenger numbers

Passenger1Both London Luton Airport and Liverpool John Lennon Airport have recorded bumper summer passenger numbers this year.

Luton saw a 6.8% year-on-year increase in the number of passengers in August, while 4.7 million people used the airport between June and August.

As a result of its strong summer, Luton is pressing forward with plans to improve its transport links, which will see the airport work alongside the Department for Transport to create a dedicated rail service.

The planned enhancements of its public transport offering will run alongside a wider development which aims to increase annual capacity by 50% by 2020.

Luton Airport Chief Executive Nick Barton believes the record number of passengers highlights the airport’s popularity among leisure and business travellers.

“We want to create an express-style service with four fast trains per hour, which will speed up our passengers’ journeys and provide essential capacity,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Liverpool John Lennon Airport welcomed 517,000 passengers in August – the highest total recorded for the month since 2011.

The busy August period has helped total passenger numbers reach 3.4 million for the year to date and the airport is expecting a record breaking year.

New offerings by Tui to Ibiza and Ryanair to Prague, Bari and Girona have all played a significant part in the growing number of passengers.

There are also set to be new routes introduced later this year, with easyJet and Ryanair offering travellers routes to Venice and Milan, respectively.

The strong figures coincide with the UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) reporting a global surge in international visitor arrivals across the globe during the first six months of the year.

UNWTO secretary-general Taleb Rifai said: “The first half of 2017 shows healthy growth in an increasingly dynamic and resilient tourism market, including a strong recovery in some of the destinations impacted by security challenges last year.”
