Eurotunnel sets new passenger record for Le Shuttle

Wheel1The Le Shuttle service broke passenger records this summer, having handled around 546,000 vehicles from July to September.

The service – which transports vehicles and animals through the channel tunnel in just 35 minutes – has seen frequent traveller bookings increase by 12% this summer.

Last year was a record breaking year in itself, however this summer saw a 2% rise in traffic growth when compared to the same period in 2016.

Animals also continue to be welcomed aboard, with around 77,500 pets travelling alongside their owners – an 8% rise on last year.

Eurotunnel commercial director Jo Willacy believes the efficiency and speed of service are huge factors when it comes to travellers booking their service, and it is something they have worked hard on to improve over the years.

“Our customer numbers continue to grow alongside their loyalty to our service. I can only thank them on behalf of all our staff for the confidence they have shown in us,” she added.

During 2016, passenger traffic increased by 2% when compared to 2015, with 2,663,865 vehicles being transported throughout the year.

The Channel Tunnel itself is hugely popular with travellers embarking on a road-trip across France and then travelling further into Europe.

France offers travellers the chance to take in amazing views, stop off at small towns located off the beaten track, and discover some of the most popular tourist attractions in the country.

One of the most popular routes taken by travellers is ‘Route Napoleon’, which begins in Grenoble, venturing down to La Mure, Sisteron and finally ending in Antibes.

Covering a distance of more than 300km, the route – named after the route Napoleon Bonaparte took with his army on his return from exile in Elba in 1815 – is a fantastic way to take in the natural landscape of the Alps and the sun-drenched French Riviera.

If you’re thinking of travelling abroad this year and plan to hire a vehicle, see if you could benefit with additional car hire excess insurance cover.
