Gardens and zoos result in growing interest in visitor attractions

Green1Garden and zoos saw the most significant growth in the number of visitors last year, according to VisitEngland’s annual survey.

The survey gathered information from over 1,500 English attractions, and found that both gardens and zoos recorded an 8% rise in visitor numbers.

Historic houses and castles also recorded a 7% increase, whilst country parks welcomed 4% more travellers than in 2015.

Tourism minister John Glen said: “Ensuring that all parts of the country benefit from our tourism industry is a key government priority so it is fantastic to see such growth across the regions.”

The British Museum welcomed the most visitors in 2016 – for the ninth consecutive year – with nearly 6.5 million travellers passing through, whilst the National Gallery recorded 6.2 million visitors.

VisitEngland Chief Executive Sally Balcombe believes the attractions are key to getting travellers to explore the different parts of the UK.

In terms of paid attractions, the Tower of London claimed the top spot for the eight-year running, attracting 2.7 million visitors, whilst Chester Zoo recorded its highest ever ranking by coming in second with around 1.9 million visitors.

The tourism economy is worth around £127 billion annually to the UK, and this year is expected to see even more growth, with 11.4 million brits enjoying breaks closer to home during the first four months of the year.

In April this year, the UK welcomed a record number of overseas visitors as the value of the pound dropped, making travel substantially cheaper.

Around 3.7 million overseas visitors were welcomed in April, which is up by 19% on the same month in 2016, whilst spending hit £2 billion for the month, a 20% jump on last year’s figure.
