Gatwick Airport reveals plans for £1 billion investment

Airport1Gatwick Airport has announced a new £1.15 billion investment programme to develop a new domestic arrivals area and more self-service bag drop facilities.

A second runway is not included in the programme, but the latest move means total investment since Gatwick became privately owned back in December 2009 will surpass £2.7 billion by 2020.

The airport is expecting to invest £240 million during 2017 as a considerable rise in the number of travellers passing through coincides with the use of larger aircraft and more long-haul routes.

Gatwick will now be able to handle 50 million passengers a year, as opposed to the 45 million recorded in 2016.

There will also be additional North Terminal border facilities implemented so the airport can handle the increased number of long-haul arrivals.

In the South Terminal, there will be a new domestic arrivals facility, including new baggage reclaim, and further improvements to access, allowing more buses to travel to and from the airport.

Raymond Melee, Gatwick’s construction director, said: “These projects will be delivered in a way that will help us realise our ambition to become the UK’s most sustainable airport.”

Gatwick is not the only airport improving its facilities, as Manchester Airport has also begun a £1 billion transformation programme.

The 10-year plan has been designed to deliver a major boost to the UK’s growth prospects, whilst also making it more appealing internationally.

Following the completion of the plan, the airport is expected to be able to handle 45 million passengers a year, an increase of almost 20 million on the number expected to pass through in 2017.

In the past few years Manchester has become the only airport outside of the capital to offer direct routes to long-haul destinations including Beijing, Muscat, Houston and San Francisco.

Charlie Cornish, Chief Executive at Manchester Airports Group, said: “This is the largest private investment that has been made in the region for some time and the increased connectivity that it will deliver will enable it to become one of the most accessible and productive regions in Europe.”
