Worlds largest Ferris wheel nears completion

Skyline1The world’s tallest and largest observation wheel is nearing completion in Dubai, according to the project developer, Meraas.

Called the Ain Dubai, the wheel will dwarf the likes of the London Eye and even the current record-holder, the 548-ft High Roller in Las Vegas, Nevada, by standing at over 668 feet tall.

Boasting 9,000 tonnes of steel, the wheel is also set to overshadow the 623-foot New York Wheel is planned for construction on Staten Island.

The tourist attraction is being built at the £1 billion Bluewater Island site, and will be able to carry 1,400 passengers in 48 self-contained capsules.

Hyundai are responsible for making the capsules which aim to give travellers an uninterrupted view of the Dubai skyline.

The wheel – which was originally going to be called the Dubai Eye – is set to be completed in 2018 and will become one of the emirate’s most popular tourist attractions.

In order to further monetize the project, a super-sized LED screen will also feature within the structure to offer advertisement opportunities.

Omar Delawar, Chief Projects Officer at Meraas, said: “The assembly of the rim at Bluewaters is one of the most exciting phases in the construction of Ain Dubai, as it marks the arrival of the centerpiece of the island.”

Dubai has invested heavily in construction projects in recent years to try and attract more travellers and boost the emirate’s overall economy.

Large investments in travel, tourist and hospitality sectors mean Dubai is expecting to welcome 20 million visitors a year by 2020.

The UK is the third highest tourism market for Dubai, falling just behind Saudi Arabia and India, respectively.

Figures from Dubai Tourism showed that the Emirate attracted 14.9 million overnight visitors in 2016, making it the fourth most visited city in the word.
