Wales Rhossili Bay named the best beach in Europe

Huts1Rhossili Bay has been named as the best beach in Europe, beating popular hotspots in Spain, Italy and Greece to the title.

Suitcase Magazine's world top 10 list placed Rhossili Bay – located in Swansea on the Gower Peninsula – in tenth place overall, but it is the only European destination to appear.

The beach has previously featured in TV shows including Doctor Who and also played a key part in the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Featuring sand dunes and rolling hills, the three-mile beach is naturally a popular attraction for tourists and plays a big role in Swansea’s economy – with tourism worth more than £400 million a year.

Robert Francis-Davies, Swansea Council's cabinet member for tourism, said: “This will hopefully result in increased awareness, visits, spend and jobs locally. Swansea is also embarking on a significant regeneration programme and raising our profile is essential in helping to attract investment.”

Pamalican in the Philippines was named at the top of the ranking and is widely regarded as a tropical paradise, offering travellers the opportunity to go diving in crystal clear water.

In second and third respectively, were Bocas del Toro in Panama and Tikehau Island in French Polynesia, which is famous for its pink sand beaches.

The pristine beach and stunning landscape saw Baia do Sancho, Fernando de Noronha, in Brazil named in fourth place, ahead of Koh Kradan in Thailand.

In sixth was Radhanagar Beach, Havelock Island, India, which surprisingly only sees a fraction of the visitors that other island destinations such as Thailand attract.

Next in the rankings are the well-known Honokalani Beach in Hawaii and South Beach, USA, which continue to attract travellers from all over the world.

Boasting miles of secluded, unspoiled sand and lined with hammocks and sun shelters, Loblolly Bay Beach in The British Virgin Islands was the final beach to make the list.
