Guernsey tourism sector starts 2017 strongly

Sea1Tourism in Guernsey grew significantly in the first quarter of 2017, with staying visitor numbers up 1.5% according to VisitGuernsey.

This equates to a total of 27,050 visitors staying in Guernsey during the first three months of 2017, with an average length stay of just over four nights.

The growth is partly down to an increase in the number of business travellers, which has risen by 35.3%.

Another factor for the growth is VisitGuernsey’s commitment to improve the cruise and ferry offering available to travellers, which has resulted in an 82% increase in the number of leisure day visits.

VisitGuernsey recently polled cruise passengers who visited the island and 94% stated that they would return for a longer stay in the future.

Over recent years there has been a steady increase in the number of ships travelling to the island, and just over 110 are set to travel this year.

Due to the island’s location, the most popular way of travelling to Guernsey is by cruise or ferry, which saw a 41.8% increase in popularity during the first quarter of 2017.

“It has been a really encouraging start to the year and it’s positive to see that visitor numbers have increased during this off-season period, especially as Q1 did not include Easter in 2017,” explained Mike Hopkins, director of marketing & tourism, VisitGuernsey.

The tourism board has been keen to promote the island to travellers and launched a new television campaign to raise awareness about Guernsey as a potential holiday destination.

VisitGuernsey are expecting the growth to continue throughout 2017 as the island hosts a number of events including both a literacy and food festival.

The Tennerfest food festival in the autumn sees more than 170 Channel Island restaurants take part and it focuses on offering great food and incredible value for money.
