Algarve remains go to holiday destination for golf fans

Golf1The Algarve has welcomed a record number of golf visitors already this year, proving that the holiday destination remains extremely popular amongst British travellers.

Portugal’s southern-most region saw a record high for golf visitors during 2016 and that is expected to be broken again this year.

Many regard the region as Europe’s number one golf destination, with more than 40 courses available for travellers to play on.

Figures from the Algarve Tourism Board revealed that hotels in the region recorded greater occupancy and revenue in the first 10 months of 2016 than in the whole of the year previously.

There were around 1.3 million rounds of golf played throughout 2016, which is an increase of more than 10% on the figure recorded in 2015.

The level of growth has continued in 2017, with nearly 328,000 rounds being played in the first quarter of the year – a 6% rise on last year.

Maria Manuel Delgado e Silva, ATA golf product manager, said: “Last year was a hugely successful year for everyone associated with our golf tourism industry but it’s fantastic to see this continue into 2017.”

As well as the high standard of golf courses, the favourable climate and relatively cheap prices make the Algarve a hugely popular destination for British travellers.

According to a recent Post Office Holiday Costs Barometer, the Algarve is the best value holiday destination in the Eurozone for 2017.

The survey looked at 14 beach resorts to survey the price on holiday essentials, such as meals and drinks, and found that the Algarve would be the best choice for those on a budget.

Regardless of if you want the very best golf experiences or simply wish to relax in the sun, there’s plenty in the Algarve to keep you entertained.
