Air New Zealand boosts flights for Lions rugby tour

LionAir New Zealand is set to add 46 additional domestic flights to its schedule over the coming weeks in order to cater for thousands of rugby fans.

Fans from across the globe will descend on New Zealand in order to watch the British and Irish Lions – a team featuring players from the national sides of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

The first game takes place in Whangarei on 3 June, with further matches in Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin, Rotorua, Hamilton and Wellington over the next five weeks.

Eden Park in Auckland will host the first of three main test matches against the All Blacks on 24 June, before the squad travels to Wellington for the second test a week later.

The Lions will then complete the tour by returning to Auckland for the third and final test on 8 July, hoping to claim only their second series victory against New Zealand – in 11 previous tours over 129 years, a 2-1 series win in 1971 remains the crowning achievement.

The extra services laid on by Air New Zealand will create an additional 3,500 seats over a five-week period in order to provide travellers the best chance to get to games.

“We are experiencing an influx of visitors to New Zealand between now and the beginning of July as well as increased demand from Kiwi rugby fans wanting to experience the roar of the crowd this winter,” said Air New Zealand’s chief revenue officer, Cam Wallace.

Additional services will be provided between Auckland and Dunedin, Rotorua, Blenheim, Whangarei and Palmerston North, as well as between Wellington and Christchurch, Tauranga and Gisborne.

Plans are also in place for the airline provider to run several charter services on days when there is expected to be high demand, including two flights utilising the airline’s Boeing 777-200 aircraft.

In April this year the airline claimed three prizes at TripAdvisor’s inaugural Travellers’ Choice Awards for airlines.

Air New Zealand was named the Best Premium Economy Class in the World, Best Airline in the South Pacific and was also recognised overall as one of the world’s top 10 flight providers.
