Reykjavik named as the number one trending destination in 2017

Snow1The Icelandic capital Reykjavic has been named as the number one trending destination for 2017 in new research from trivago.

The annual Global Summer Trends report shows that Reykjavik has recorded the greatest increase in online searches over the past two years, as it has progressed to become a hugely popular alternative to the traditional summer beach holiday.

Using exclusive price data collected from platforms around the world, trivago is able to identify the destinations which have seen the biggest increase in popularity.

Cuba’s Varadero was found to be the second most popular destination and came in significantly higher than the country’s capital, Havana.

In third place was Fethiye, Turkey, which is well known for its natural harbour, blue waters and numerous rock tombs, including the 4th-century B.C. Tomb of Amyntas.

Spain is the only country to feature two destinations in the list, and both are located in the south-eastern Alicante province, with Alicante coming in at number four and the nearby Torrevieja at ten.

Alicante has grown in popularity considerably over the past few years and no longer remains a secret amongst British travellers.

Europe was found to be well represented in the list, taking up 50% of the destinations, with Crikvenica, located on Croatia's Adriatic coast, coming in at ninth.

Malacca, Malaysia; Cartagena, Colombia; Cancun, Mexico and Cape Town, South Africa, finished in fifth to eighth place respectively.

Eleanor Kutylowski, External Relations at trivago, said: “Europe is the place to be this year. For those looking to venture abroad, these destinations are perfect for a short haul break, however with most UK travellers choosing to holiday for an average of 7 days, the long-haul options outside of the continent are set to be just as popular.”
