British holidaymakers walk fourteen marathons in airports

The average British holidaymaker can expect to walk a distance equivalent to almost fourteen marathon races when they travel through airports during their life.

The data from Goldcar totals up the miles expected from a lifetime of travelling and found that the average British adult walks 355 miles as they catch flights. As an average of 1.1km is covered every time they board or disembark from a flight and an average holidaymaker takes just under two return journeys a year, Goldcar estimates that adds up to 571.5km, or 355 miles in total.

The most frequent travellers among those surveyed walked 54 miles in only a single year and if they did that every year throughout their adult lives it would mean they would clock up more than 3,400 miles.

To put things into perspective, the average Spanish holidaymaker can expect to walk 429km or 267 miles through airports in their lifetime.

Longest journeys

UK airports with the longest journeys include Gatwick, where the trek from the entrance to the North Terminal is estimated to be 1.8km or 1.12 miles. At Heathrow, anyone flying in or out of Terminal 5 can expect to hike a distance of 1.22km or 0.76 miles.

Elsewhere in the world, China's Beijing Capital International Airport Terminal 3 has a two mile walk and at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in the USA, 1.3 miles need to be covered.

Quick getaway

“It's staggering to think that we walk that far through airports in our lives,” explained Customer Service Director of Goldcar, Tonica Safont.

“Although it explains why customers are so keen to make a quick getaway when they arrive at their destinations.”

New tech can help navigate airports by using interactive apps and Goldcar's own Key'n'Go service directs users to collect rental car keys from a kiosk using their smartphone.
