Visa-free travel tool shows best passports

The idea of having to apply and pay for a visa to visit a foreign country isn't something most holidaymakers think about. However, finding out too late that you need extra paperwork can cause a last minute rush or even lead to a cancellation.

Now a new interactive map can give you all the information you need about visa-free travel and has revealed the countries with the best and worst passports when it comes to ease of travel.

Powerful passports

Luckily for most Brits, the UK passport is one of the most powerful in the world when it comes to allowing visa free travel to a wide selection of destinations.

According to the latest annual report by the citizenship and planning firm Henley and Partners, holders are able to visit 173 countries out of a possible 218 without needing a visa at the current time. That means there are only 45 destinations that involve applying for extra travel documentation.

However, the British passport is not quite at the top of the pile. German passport holders can visit 176 countries without a visa, Sweden's passport gives access to 175, and Denmark, Finland, Italy, Spain and the United States each have 174 visa-free arrangements in place.

Most hassle

Holders of passports from Syria, Pakistan, Iraq and Afghanistan each have visa-free access to less than 30 countries, according to the interactive map produced by an Australian legal website.

Australia itself has a unique position in the field of visa travel, because although Australian passport holders can travel freely to 75% of countries visa-free, entry to Australia is only available to citizens of New Zealand.

If you want to find out the exact requirements for travel to a particular country it's best to contact their embassy in the UK to get an accurate idea of the times scale involved in applying for a visa if it is needed.

If you’re thinking of travelling abroad this year, be sure to organise your Worldwide Travel Insurance in advance.
