New study reveals Europe's cheapest holiday destinations

The annual report from the Post Office looking at the cost of holiday destinations around Europe has come up with cheapest options for those looking to book a bargain getaway.

British holidaymakers’ looking for value for money are finding it tough given the drop in value of sterling on the international money markets, so any info that can help make a holiday pound go further will be welcomed by many.

Top spot

The report uses a basket of tourist spending favourites to build up a picture of potential costs. These include a bottle of beer, a three-course evening meal for two with a bottle of wine and a cup of coffee. If you choose to take you holiday in Sunny Beach in Bulgaria, the hypothetical basket will cost you just £37.33, placing it firmly at the top of the list.

The Algarve takes the title of second cheapest destination surveyed with a basket value of £58.38 and Spain's Costa del Sol comes in at third place at £60.65.

Andrew Brown of Post Office Travel Money commented: “If you haven’t already booked a holiday, do your homework to find a resort which best fits your budget.”

Swap resorts

The report found the cost of holiday essentials could vary considerably within the same region. For instance, of the four Greek islands looked at, Crete was the cheapest at £81.84 and Corfu the dearest at £90.05 for the survey's basket of goods.

“Swapping resorts could save a lot of money, and this applies to popular resorts all over Europe, as well as Greece,” Brown explained.

Spain also had stark differences in costs. The Costa del Sol's basket of items came in at such good value because a meal costs only £28.61, yet on the Balearic island of Ibiza you could expect to pay £65.52, with a total 'basket cost' being £131.02.
