Where will you find the world’s best airport

While we all go on holiday to enjoy the wonderful destinations we’ve planned to visit, the airport experience can make a huge difference to the journey.

Thanks to the World Airport Awards – think the Oscars of Aviation and you’re on the right lines – Skytrax have revealed the best for 2017.

And if you’re off to Singapore Changi Airport anytime soon, you’re in for a treat!

With a free cinema and an orchid garden among a host of other features, the airport has claimed the title of ‘world’s best airport’ for a fifth year in a row.

You’ll find entertainment and leisure facilities at nearly every turn, all aiming to make the airport experience as relaxing and enjoyable as possible.

But that shouldn’t be too surprising, as the airport has held the title for best leisure amenities since 2009.

Since the awards were first introduced in 2000, Changi has claimed the best airport award eight times – a pretty impressive feat however you look at it.

Skytrax CEO Edward Plaisted said the achievements of Changi reflect its popularity with international travellers.

This year, more than 13.8 million travellers from 105 countries took part in the voting, with 550 airports arpund the globe receiving a mention.

In order to separate the best from the rest, the survey looks at a number of key indicators, including check-in times, ease of arrivals, transfers, shopping, security and the experience through to the departure gate.

Every step of the experience from walking in the front doors to stepping on the plane is carefully considered.

Tokyo International Airport (Haneda) took second spot – as well as the title for world’s cleanest airport – with Incheon International Airport and Munich following just behind overall.

Heathrow, which took the title as best airport for shopping, featured in ninth on the overall list, and was the only UK airport to feature.

Hong Kong was fifth globally and topped the pile for airport dining, while the Crowne Plaza hotel at Changi took the title of world’s best airport hotel.

For those journeying to Hamad International Airport, Central Japan International, Zurich and Frankfurt anytime soon, you can also expect a great traveller experience, as those locations completed the overall top ten.

If you’re planning on travelling overseas this year, be sure to organise your worldwide travel insurance in advance.
