U shaped New York skyscraper would be the Longest building in the world

The Big Bend in New York could be the latest skyscraper to join the ranks of The Shard in London and Dubai's Burj Khalifa as being among the world’s iconic tall buildings.

The new structure, proposed by a New York architectural firm for an area of luxury skyscrapers known as Billionaires' Row, is planned to adhere to the city’s restrictive property zoning rules by using a clever curved designed that would make it the world’s longest building.

Plans for the Big Bend, which would measure 4,000 feet in length from end to end, show a striking U-shaped bend at its highest central point. When fully stretched out the slim tower would be nearly double the height of some of the world’s existing tallest skyscrapers.

Innovations

Amongst the innovations that would be featured in the new building is a lift that can “travel in curves” both vertically and horizontally in continuous loops along the length of the tower.

The planners, Oiio Studio, say the design of The Big Bend is a reaction to “an undeniable obsession that resides in Manhattan” where “developers try to maximise their property’s height in order to infuse it with the prestige of a high rise structure”.

“The Big Bend can become a modest architectural solution to the height limitations of Manhattan. We can now provide our structures with the measurements that will make them stand out without worrying about the limits of the sky,” said the company.

Although planning permission for the building, which would overlook Central Park, has yet to be granted, if the plans come to fruition the Big Bend would undoubtedly become a major tourist attraction.

Side-scraper

The design isn't the only new approach to skyscrapers, as American designers Yitan Sun and Jianshi Wu last year revealed a design they called a “side-scraper”. Named New Horizon, the 1,000 ft-tall and 100 ft-wide skyscraper is based on a horizontal design that would go around the entire seven-mile perimeter of Central Park.
