BA adds British bubbly to drinks menu
British Airways has always been seen to 'fly the flag' for the UK and now the world famous carrier is going to be serving English sparkling wine to passengers for the first time.
West Sussex based winery Bolney Wine Estate will be adding the fizz to flying for first class BA passengers when its Vintage Blanc de Blancs is added to the menu later in the month. It will be in place as the guest sparkling wine available in First class for the following six months.
The vintage Chardonnay is a smooth and full-bodied wine that features yeasty undertones complemented by fresh citrus notes. The Bolney Estate's produce cannot be called 'champagne' under strict EU laws regulating the origination of various types of food and drink, but the growing reputation of the popular Sussex winery means that passengers will be in no doubt of its claim to be in first class.
British Airways’ First customers drank more than 160,000 bottles of champagne on board flights last year alone, as well as 133,000 bottles of red wine and 150,000 of white wine.
Tasted by experts
British Airways’ head of catering Colin Talbot said they are delighted to be adding the vintage wine to their collection of beverages available on flights.
“This is the first time we have offered an English sparkling white wine on board and we think our customers are going to love it,” he added.
All of the wines that BA offers on board their flights are blind tasted by experts to make sure only the very best is served, and the new addition from Bolney came out on top in a recent tasting session.
It is the first time that an English sparkling wine will join the likes of Laurent Perrier Grande Siecle and Jacquart Mosaique Rose NV on the Champagne and sparkling wine menu.
