New research unveils best-kept secret destinations

Holidaymakers from the UK would be willing to spend an extra £300 on their getaway if they knew it was guaranteed to include an unforgettable once-in-a-lifetime sight, according to new research.

The Kuoni Worldwide Trends Report not only revealed that eight out of ten British holidaymakers would like to do something away from the usual tourist destinations, but that they would also be willing to pay more to do so. Not only that, as the research unveiled what it claims to be the top 20 best-kept travel secrets in the world.

Secluded beauty spots

Kuoni spokeswoman Rachel O’Reilly explained: “Whilst the Grand Canyon, the Great Wall of China and the Taj Mahal attract thousands of visitors per year between them and remain high on people’s wish lists, a generation of travellers are now seeking more secluded beauty spots.”

The availability of information online and the expanding network of airlines flying to more remote and unusual destinations means that there are far more opportunities than ever before for British holidaymakers to visit somewhere special.

The trend for alternative places and new experiences away from well-trodden tourist hotspots means places such as Jaffna in the North of Sri Lanka, the ancient Mayan city of Yaxchilan in Mexico, and El Nido Pangulasian Island in the Philippines are all seeing an upsurge in visitor numbers.

However, there is an added aspect of secrecy that can make it difficult to plan a trip to somewhere new. “Although many people are happy to visit lesser-known holiday sights based on friends' recommendations, it seems they're less likely to tell others about them,” O'Reilly added.

Top 20

As well as those already mentioned, other secret destinations and experiences include the views of the Taj Mahal from Mehtab Bagh, India; Bukchon Village in Seoul, South Korea; Con Dao Island, Vietnam; and Tirimbina Rainforest Reserve in Costa Rica.

Nearer to home, the hike between Oia and Imerovigli in Santorini, Greece; and the town of Matera in the Basilicata region of Italy; are also locations that are only recently becoming more well-known.
