One year countdown to PyeongChang Winter Olympics begins
National Olympic Committees and their winter sports athletes have been officially invited to take part in the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018.
The starting gun has been fired for the Games, which will open in one year’s time, as The International Olympic Committee has made the first moves to prepare for the much anticipated event.
A ceremony took place in the Republic of Korea at the Gangneung Hockey Centre and the actual invitations were sent out from the HQ of the IOC in Lausanne in Switzerland.
The Gangneung celebrations showcased Korean culture and the line-up included a concert with K-pop stars and the 2018 Choir. The city will host all ice sport competitions during the games next year and the launch event was attended by Gunilla Lindberg, IOC coordination commission chair, who joined representatives of the government of the Republic of Korea.
The Olympic torch and torchbearer uniform were also unveiled in part of the event that featured Olympic figure skating gold medallist Yuna Kim and Youth Olympic Games cross country gold medallist Magnus Kim.
IOC president Thomas Bach spoke via video message at the event. He said: “The Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 will open up new horizons. It will connect the people and the passion of the Republic of Korea with the world.
“PyeongChang will transform into a hub for Asian winter sports. For the first time, the magic of Olympic sport on snow and ice will come to Korea.”
Ticket sales are already taking place and a number of test events have been successful. Around 91,000 applications were received for the 22,400 places available on the volunteer programme which will put in place by organisers.
It is expected that PyeongChang 2018 will see fresh new approach for the Olympic Movement which takes full advantage of the youthful and contemporary approach of South Korea and its acceptance of new technology.
