Prices drop for Costa del Sol resorts this year
British holidaymakers hunting for a bargain this year should turn to the Costa del Sol, as in-resort prices for the Spanish region currently offer even better value than usual.
That’s according to new data from Post Office Travel Money, who compared local prices from 44 destinations for a basket of standard tourist items including meals and drinks and other essentials.
Post Office’s Worldwide Holiday Costs Barometer is a tool for helping holidaymakers find the best places that will make their money go further.
The latest round of figures shows the average price for a basket of staple goods is £38.79 in the Costa del Sol, which is 3% lower than last year.
European resorts nine out of ten
In all, European resorts take nine out of ten for the best-value places to visit in the new Worldwide Holiday Costs Barometer and the Costa del Sol is in third place.
The chart is actually topped by the Algarve in neighbouring Portugal for the second year running, where the price of an evening meal for two with wine is almost 5% lower year-on-year.
A more surprising entry is in second place, where Sunny Beach in Bulgaria has seen a 1.5% fall in local prices and is only just behind the Algarve in terms of value. Marmaris in Turkey, Prague, Budapest and Corfu also feature in the top ten.
For those setting their sights further afield, Tokyo has beaten Cape Town and Bali to claim the crown of best-value long-haul destination. Elsewhere, sterling is now stronger against 60% of best-selling currencies than it was five years ago.
Post Office Travel Money's Andrew Brown said: “Holidaymakers can do little about sterling's value but they can do their homework and plan trips to resorts or cities where prices for meals, drinks and other tourist staples are low.”
He described Europe as looking “unbeatable” for value and said that local prices had fallen in half of the European resorts and cities that were looked at.
