Golf in paradise – plans unveiled for Vietnamese Halong Bay course

Golfers will soon be flocking to experience the game at a renowned UNESCO World Heritage Site, as plans have been unveiled for a stunning 18-hole course overlooking the beauty of Halong Bay.

The course near the famed limestone karst-studded bay will also have a hotel, a number of villas and a convention centre.

A par-71 course, FLC Golf Links Halong Bay will be designed by US firm Schmidt-Curley, on behalf of the Hanoi-based FLC Group.

The site is expected to offer some of the best surroundings for golf on the planet, alongside stunning views of Halong Bay.

Designer Brian Curley has said it will be a “world-class destination resort” and suggested that it will become one of ten locations across the globe that every golfer will want to visit.

Although the course is relatively short by modern standards at 6,800 yards from the tips, and 6,200-6,300 yards from white tees, it is the views that will make it a dream to play.

The eighth and twelfth holes are comparable to Pebble Beach’s famed seventh hole, while three of the course’s five par-three holes feature 180 degree views of the bay.

It looks set to be a paradise for golf and it’s been designed to be played by those with all abilities too, although it won’t be easy by any stretch.

Not all holes follow each other due to the terrain, which has also made construction tricky, but that pales into insignificance really given the beautiful views of one of Vietnam’s most stunning locations.

FLC Golf Links Halong should open later this year, with players expected to be able to complete a round by some point during the third quarter.

A world heritage site since 1994, the mix of limestone pillars and islets covered in forests is northern Vietnam’s major tourism attraction.

Cruise tours are incredibly popular and are a great way to start or end a trip to Vietnam – after all, Halong Bay is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

If you’re planning a golf trip overseas in the coming year, be sure to organise your golf travel insurance in advance.
