4.5 million Brits to head overseas for Christmas and New Year

It’s set to be a very busy period for Brits this Christmas, as new figures from ABTA reveal 4.5 million will travel abroad between now and the New Year.

Friday 23 December will be the busiest day as passengers clamber for flights to winter sun destinations such as Tenerife, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote.

Other popular destinations involve long-haul trips to Jamaica, Goa, Cape Verde and the Dominican Republic, showing there are few limits on where Brits will go for a getaway.

Several major European cities are also popular choices for New Year, with routes to Dublin, Amsterdam and Barcelona all expected to be busy.

A getaway to New York for New Year to see the traditional ball drop in Times Square is another popular choice.

The figures relate to the period between 18 December and 2 January, with millions of people venturing all over the globe.

Gatwick is expecting just shy of one million passengers to pass through its gates while an estimated 638,000 will pass through Stansted.

A further 380,000 travellers will use Luton Airport, 238,000 will fly from Edinburgh while Birmingham and Bristol expect to see 215,000 and 130,000 departures respectively.

Heathrow had also previously revealed it was expecting 1.2 million departing passengers in the ten days to Boxing Day.

ABTA Chief Executive Mark Tanzer said the period is always busy every year and advised travellers to check their routes before travelling to avoid delays.

It’s not just the airports that expected to be busy either, as more than 368,000 passengers are expected to use the Eurostar service between 21 December and 3 January.

Those figures included close to 40,000 people that are expected to venture across to France in the days immediately before the New Year.

If you’re planning on going abroad in the coming weeks, don’t forget your last minute travel insurance.
