London Stansted £130 million expansion plans unveiled

Plans for a new triple-level £130 million terminal at London Stanstead have been unveiled, with the development expected to be completed by 2022.

The development is expected to make the busiest single terminal airport in the UK more manageable for travellers.

Stansted is currently the busiest airport of its kind in the UK, with as many as 5,000 passengers going through departures every hour at peak times, but it needs to be expanded.

The new arrival building will help the airport handle up to 43 million passengers a year, resulting in a significant boost for the UK travel industry.

It will be constructed next to the current terminal and will include a larger baggage reclaim area, public forecourt and new retail facilities.

Passenger numbers are expected to increase continuously over the next decade, resulting in the need for expansion through a new arrivals building.

The development has been designed to ensure that the airport is in a position to make full use of its single runway and serve around 43 million passengers a year.

If the relevant planning approvals and consent is given, it is expected that the arrivals building will take up to three years to be completed.

The project will also see additional improvements to the existing terminal, meaning the project will be finished by 2022.

Stansted Airport’s Chief Executive Andrew Cowan, said: “The planning application and concept design for the new arrivals building marks the latest phase in our transformation and enables us to support further growth over the next decade.”

The investment is expected to boost competition and allow the airport to play a bigger role when it comes to supporting jobs, economic growth and international connectivity.
