When are the cheapest months to book a holiday in 2017?

If you’re keen to save money on your travels in 2017, the timing, and even the day you book on, can make all the difference.

Statistics from Opodo.co.uk show that April, August, September and October deliver the best discounts for those looking to go on holiday, whilst booking on a Saturday and Sunday means cheaper prices.

Travellers booking on a Saturday made an average saving of 4% to 6% on domestic trips, 3% on short-haul and 3% on long-haul, whilst those on Sunday saw an average saving of 3% to 7% on domestic options, 3% on short-haul and 1% on long-haul.

Data from all return flights departing from the UK between November 2015 and October 2016 were examined by the online travel agent.

“It's no secret that high seasons and low seasons dictate a great swing in flight prices, the best time to book flights fall much like the leaves: in September and October,” said experts at Opodo.

Meanwhile those planning to visit popular long-haul destinations, such as Hong Kong, Dubai or New York should hold out until April.

Figures show that tickets are on average 6% cheaper than in the rest of the year, giving customers the opportunity to make savings, which can soon add up.

However, for those booking for 2018, then it is better to wait until September to book, as customers will be able to find an average saving of 8% across the board.

For travellers looking to visit Europe in the summer, flights in April are on average 5% cheaper than the rest of the year; the only exception to this is September and October when prices drop by 14% and 13% respectively.

Experts at Opodo warn against booking the first flights you find, explaining that with a little planning it is possible to find great savings with a range of airlines.

If you’re thinking of travelling abroad this year, be sure to organise your worldwide travel insurance in advance.
