Travel experts reveal best places to visit in the US in 2017

Lonely Planet has announced its annual ‘Best in the U.S.’ list, which names the top ten most exciting places to visit in 2017.

Travel experts scoured the States this year to choose ten destinations in the US poised to shine next year, whether they are relatively unknown or offering new reasons to visit in 2017.

The travel experts have named 'Beer City' Asheville in North Carolina as the best destination to visit, as it is well known for its welcoming people, eclectic architecture and creative spirit.

The area has also seen in a boom in its food and drink scene, which when linked with its spectacular natural beauty has firmly put it on the map as a go-to travel destination.

Following in second place is Western Washington, which has become well renowned for its stunning landscapes – made famous in the American television series, Twin Peaks.

In third place is heartland hub Lincoln, Nebraska, which is bursting with activities, including music, bike trails, art walks and farmers’ markets.

California's Low Desert has been named in fourth place and has begun to attract a new generation of visitors, who are heading to Palm Springs and beyond.

Travellers can experience a great view of Coachella Valley via the world's largest aerial tramway, or visit Joshua Tree, Salton Sea, or for something a little quirkier, Salvation Mountain.

Montana's Flathead Valley, listed in fifth place, is home to one of the largest wilderness areas in the contiguous states, and is a gateway to Glacier National Park and the Canadian border, making it the ideal location for any type of adventure.

Experts placed Atlanta, Georgia, in sixth, due to its world-class art scene, whilst the Adirondack Mountains – New York's best views after Manhattan – was named in seventh.

Texas also makes an appearance in the top 10 rankings, with the Hill Country wine region coming in at number eight.

Making up the rest of the top ten is Denver, Colorado and Florida's Emerald Coast – which offers a 100-mile stretch of sugar-fine sand and beachfront towns.

Lonely Planet managing editor, Rebecca Warren, described the list as incredibly diverse and said the locations provide a “panoramic tour of America”.

“Whether travellers want to escape to the mountains, get transported back in time or relax by the beach, these are the destinations to be excited about,” she added.

If you’re thinking of travelling abroad this year, be sure to organise your multi-trip travel insurance in advance.
