Winter holiday bookings increase by 16% year-on-year

Winter holiday bookings have increased 16% year-on-year according to the latest industry figures released by ABTA.

The figures reveal that three in ten people (29%) are set to jet off on a break this winter, with many looking for to substitute the cold weather with some sun.

People between the ages of 25 and 34 were found to be the most likely to take a winter holiday, with more than a third (36%) planning to do, closely followed by those aged over 65 (33%).

Those aged between 18 and 24 were most likely to be unsure about whether or not to take a winter break, with a third saying they were undecided.

Of those looking to plan a winter holiday, winter sun was found to be the most popular holiday option, with just under a third (31%) seeing it as the best option, followed by city and UK breaks respectively.

Winter bookings seem to be following a similar trend to the summer, where a drop in the level of business to traditionally popular destinations such as Egypt meant there was a surge in popularity to Western Mediterranean destinations in particular.

GfK’s Travel Leisure Monitor reveals that bookings to the most popular winter holiday destination, Spain, have seen a 33% year-on-year increase, whilst Portugal and Cyprus have seen a 41% and 34% surge in bookings respectively.

Away from Europe, long haul sunseekers are driving growth in the winter market with bookings to the Caribbean up 21% and Asia up 17%.

Mark Tanzer, ABTA Chief Executive, said it is encouraging to see such strong growth in bookings for the winter season.

He adds that the given the wide range of available options, from winter sun to city and ski breaks, it should be of little surprise to see so many people planning a winter break.
