Mexican airline sees 25% rise in UK passenger numbers

Aeromexico has reported a 25% rise in UK passenger numbers, as the airline’s Heathrow-Mexico City service continues to grow in popularity.

From January to September 2016, the Mexican airline carried 75,000 travellers, compared to the whole of 2015 when they carried 85,000.

The Mexican flag carrier has been operating flights to the UK for four years and has seen continuous growth throughout that period.

Plans are in place to introduce more journeys in March next year, taking the total to seven flights a week, four more than when they first started.

According to the airline’s Senior Vice President Commercial Global Sales, Jorge Goytortua Bores, the move will boost capacity by 19%, helping towards their target of 150,000 annual passengers.

The airline has reported that leisure and business traffic were both very strong, mainly due to a strong trade agreement between Mexico and the UK.

The UK is also the second biggest inbound market for leisure travel growth after the US, knocking Canada down from second to third place in terms of leading tourism source markets.

Aeromexico has also begun working closely with tour operators and travel agents to incentivise the market to visit and experience Mexico.

The airlines growth is also set to continue in Europe, with capacity across the continent expected to increase by 30% in 2017.

The Amsterdam service will increase from three weekly to daily flights; Madrid will increase from 10 to 12 flights weekly; and a B787-9 will be rolled out on the Paris daily route, boosting capacity by 12%.

Aeromexico is also the only Latin American airline to operate direct services to Asia and as a result, routes to Japan and China are growing by 50%.
