Bordeaux named best city by Lonely Planet travel guide

TravelguideBordeaux in France has been named as the top city in Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2017 list, thanks to a new high-speed train line from Paris.

Lonely Planet is the largest travel guide book publisher in the world and predicts the hottest trends, destinations and experiences every October.

Previously, Bordeaux has been nicknamed ‘sleeping beauty’ in reference to the old centre which had black walls due to pollution.

However, a large part of the city has been completely renovated and the new LGV Sud-Ouest line, due for completion in middle of 2017, will connect the city with Europe’s high- speed train network – and cutting travel time from Paris to just two hours.

Bordeaux is the world’s major wine industry capital; is home to the world’s main wine fair, Vinexpo, and is well renowned for its thriving smaller restaurant scene.

Cape Town, which has been a hotspot for travellers for a while now, was second on the list due to its natural charms and exceptional cuisine.

The city’s Table Mountain has been a huge draw for tourists, alongside its beautiful beaches. It will also be attractive to art lovers as the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA), the world’s largest museum of contemporary African art, is due to open in 2017.

Making up the top three is the American city of Los Angeles, a favourite amongst celebrities, sun worshippers and health-food lovers.

However, the guide picked up on LA’s thriving cultural scene and also the efforts it is making to improve mobility around a city which is famed for its traffic jams.

In fourth and fifth are Merida, Mexico – well renowned for its cultural offerings of live music, art shows and dance performances – and Ohrid, Macedonia, which has transformed itself from Macedonia’s religious centre to its busiest holiday resort.

Making up the rest of the top ten is Pistoia, Italy, nicknamed ‘little Florence’ for its concentration of art and architecture, Seoul, South Korea; Lisbon, Portugal; Moscow, Russia and lastly, Portland, Oregon, which Lonely Planet describes as America’s city of the future.
