Increase in European trip bookings from young British travellers

TravelNew research from Contiki has detailed a 22% rise in European trip bookings by young travellers, since the UK’s decision to leave the EU.

Figures suggest that group travel is hugely popular among young travellers, and that they are keen to take advantage of the UK’s current EU status before things change.

Contiki commissioned the survey of 2,000 18 to 35 year old UK residents in order to explore the effect that Brexit has had on their travel plans.

The survey found that one in ten young travellers thought about bringing forward their travel plans as they were concerned about the restrictions that would be put in place.

The increase in sales of trips around Europe suggests that traveller’s feel going in groups together is a much more cost-effective option post-referendum, as they seek to get the most out of the British Pound.

Top of the list of concerns relating to the period after Brexit is cost, with young holidaymakers fearful that poor exchange rates could have an impact.

“It’s no surprise that young British residents are cautious about spending abroad due to a weak exchange rate, but a group trip with more inclusions is proving to be the perfect solution in the current environment,” explains Donna Jeavons, Contiki’s Sales and Marketing director for UK and Europe.

Those that have decided to change their travel plans have decided to visit long haul destinations and non-EU European locations instead. Some 15% have opted for Iceland, while 13% have chosen the USA (13%) and Montenegro as their destination of choice.

Other popular locations included Norway, Canada, Morocco, Russia, Australia, Brazil and Mexico.

The research shows a hunger for travel within Europe, but Contiki insists that travellers consider their options when thinking about transport and accommodation arrangements in order to avoid any additional costs.
