Survey reveals Cape Town is best value long-haul destination

Capetown1Cape Town has overtaken Bali to be named the cheapest of 34 long haul resorts and cities in a new survey.

The annual long haul holiday report compiled by Post Office Travel Money found that for just £48.89 you could get 10 tourist items, including meals and drinks, in Cape Town.

Coming in second was Bali, where the cost of eating has increased by more than 50% in the past 12 months, taking the total to £62.56.

Following on from last year’s results, Jumeirah Beach, Dubai was the most expensive destination, costing £199.34, more than four times the price of some tourist items in Cape Town.

At £63.87, Tokyo was found to be the third cheapest in the value chart, and due to an 8% fall in local prices, the Japanese capital is now challenging Bali for second place.

Tokyo is also one of the 40% of resorts and cities that were surveyed where local prices have dropped below last year’s levels.

Across the board, tourist costs rose by an average of a quarter once the sterling exchange rate was taken into account.

Andrew Brown, of Post Office Travel Money, said: “Costs may be higher in long haul holiday resorts this year for UK travellers but the good news is that local price cuts in many of the most popular ones will help to lessen the impact of the weaker pound.”

Mr Brown has highlighted how doing some holiday homework before booking to find out where drinks and meals are cheapest can have a huge impact on the overall cost of a holiday.

Alongside South Africa, Costa Rica and Peru were named as ten hotlist predictions by the Post Office in its annual holiday money report in January.

Following that, sales of the Costa Rican colon have seen a 46% increase to make it the second fastest growing currency this year, whilst the Peruvian sol has seen a 19% year-on-year increase.

A major factor for the increase is the introduction of direct flights from the UK, alongside the fact that it offers tourists good value for money.
