New York’s Met Museum ranked number one in the world
TripAdvisor has ranked New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art as the best museum in the world for the second consecutive year.
The 2016 Travellers’ Choice Awards for Museums placed Chicago's Art Institute and St Petersburg's State Hermitage Museum and Winter Palace into second and third place respectively.
The museum is the largest art exhibition in the United States and is an iconic institution in New York as it sets out to connect people using art.
Visitors are able to take in more than 5,000 years of art from every corner of the world, as well as wonders of medieval Europe through its art, gardens and architecture.
Europe was represented in the top 10 through the Musee d'Orsay in Paris, which was ranked fourth, and the British Museum was ranked in eighth place.
The rest of the top 10 was made up by the National Museum of Anthropology (Museo Nacional de Antropologia) in Mexico City, The National 9/11 Memorial & Museum in New York, Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid, The Acropolis Museum in Athens, and Vasa Museum in Stockholm.
When looking at museums within Europe, it seems that the UK is the best destination, occupying seven places in the top £25 – more than any other country.
The British Museum and Victoria and Albert Museum took fourth and seventh place respectively in that list, with The National Gallery, Natural History Museum and Churchill War Rooms in 13th, 14th and 15th. York's National Railway Museum bagged 20th place with the National Museum of Scotland named in 24th.
A relatively new addition to the UK top 10 standings is York Castle Museum, which took tenth place, and houses a collection that showcases the social history of Yorkshire.
“Once again the UK comes out on top with more winning museums than any other European country and the free admission that most of them offer make a visit to one of the UK's top ten museums a great value day out,” commented TripAdvisor spokesperson Hayley Coleman.
