August record for passengers set by London’s Heathrow Airport

AirportLondon’s Heathrow Airport has reported that it handled a record number of passengers in August, with a greater number flying to Latin America and the Middle East.

As it stands Heathrow operates at around 98% capacity and struggles to add new flights to its offering, which is why it is battling it out with Gatwick for government approval on an extra runway.

A record 7.34 million passengers were handled at the airport in August, showing signs that there has not been a dip in performance following the European Union referendum decision.

Heathrow, which is Europe’s busiest airport, claimed that numbers grew by 0.1% on the previous year.

The airport has made the argument that they need to expand and build a new runway following the EU decision, as it will allow them to build more routes with trading nations.

Passenger traffic to the Middle East increased by 9.1%, whilst Latin America rose by 5.1%, according to Heathrow, who put the jump in numbers down due to an increased use of larger aircraft.

In comparison to the first eight months of 2015, the airport’s passenger numbers have increased by 0.7% in 2016 to date.

Heathrow also reported that cargo traffic to emerging markets also increased by 5.7% to the Middle East, 12% to Latin America and 3.7% to East Asia.

Direct rival for Heathrow, Gatwick, also recorded its busiest ever August, recording a 5.7% rise on last year as 4.8 million passengers travelled through the airport.

A huge reason for the growth was a 51% boost in passengers using North Atlantic routes, whist the UK sector increased by 9.1%.

Manchester Airport saw 2.9 million passengers travel through last month, an increase of just over 9% on last year.
