Russia named best destination in Europe in prestigious travel awards

Russia St Petersburg in Russia has been voted as Europe’s best destination in the annual World Travel Awards (WTA).

The prestigious awards are widely known as ‘the Oscars of the travel industry’ and are held annually with winners voted via a jury of international hospitality experts.

There were a range of categories across Europe, including the best European airline, which was won by Lufthansa – the largest German airline.

Zurich was awarded the accolade for the best airport for the 12th consecutive year during the awards, held in Sardinia, Italy.

Titanic Belfast in Northern Island – a visitor attraction and monument to Belfast's maritime heritage where the RMS Titanic was built – was named as Europe’s best tourist attraction.

Portugal managed to win a range of different accolades, including the best beach destination, the Algarve, and the best cruise stop, Lisbon, while the best island destination was awarded to Madeira.

For a city break, Lyon – based in France’s historical Rhône-Alpes region – was voted to be the best place to visit.

When it comes to airlines, Norwegian was the winner in the low-cost category, whilst Lufthansa was the best overall, as well as winning the economy category.

The UK was also well represented, as British Airways received an award for its first class offering, whilst Swiss International Air Lines offered the best business class service according to the judging panel.

The best new hotel is the InterContinental London at The O2, a recently built luxury hotel located in historic Royal Greenwich.

Europe's best hotel was named as Ciragan Palace Kempinski Istanbul, Turkey, while the best hotel suite is The Katara Suite at Excelsior Hotel Gallia, Italy.
