London named UK’s top tourist destination in new poll
London is the UK’s top tourist destination, according to the annual Condé Nast Traveller Readers’ Choice Awards 2016.
The capital was voted the best UK city for the sixth year running, and the best city for restaurants and bars in the UK for the second consecutive year, in the reader-nominated awards ceremony for one of the most popular travel magazines in the world.
London’s hotels also dominated the top 15 UK business hotel category, taking up 12 spots, whilst the Soho Hotel came in second for the best UK holiday hotel.
The city’s spas were also rewarded, with three topping the hotel spas category, including The Spa at Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, The Bulgari Spa at Bulgari Hotel & Residences, and ESPA Life at Corinthia Hotel London.
The awards for the city come after recent research from London & Partners – the Mayor’s official tourism body for London – found that overseas visitors made 18.7 million visits to the city’s best known cultural institutions in 2015, which is 1.8 million more than in 2012.
Julie Chappell, Head of Visitlondon.com, the official city guide from London & Partners, believes the awards have come at an ideal time for London, as the capital is set to provide yet another fantastic blockbuster season of culture – a huge attraction for bringing tourists into the city.
London’s nightlife and culinary scene continues to go from strength to strength, and will benefit more from the introduction of the Night Tube. The capital now boasts 65 Michelin-star restaurants, as well as cuisines from every corner of the globe.
Separate research has also shown that London’s growing tourism trade is going to continue post-Brexit, as two-thirds of Americans who visited the city in the last two years said they will definitely return, mainly due to the more favourable exchange rate which significantly lowers the cost of the trip.
