Europe's cheapest holiday destinations revealed

New research has revealed the cheapest cities in Europe, with a break to Bulgaria’s Sunny Beach costing just £58.22.

The study carried out by, an airport transfers website, compared the price of hotel accommodation for a night, dinner for two, a 1-kilometre taxi ride and a variety of food and drink purchases across 48 cities and seaside resorts.

Sunny Beach, a favourite amongst summer tourists on Bulgaria’s Black Sea Coast, was found to be the best bet for those after some sun on a budget, with the total cost for all eight items coming in at £58.22.

In comparison, the same shopping list in the most expensive city featured, Copenhagen, would cost a traveller £302.90.

The study also replicates the findings of a Post Office summer price survey, which was published in April, and also named Sunny Beach as Europe’s cheapest seaside destination.

Joining Copenhagen in the top five most expensive spots is Stockholm, London – which would cost £275.15 in total – Venice and Dublin.

Other cheap destinations featured within Hoppa’s study include Ostrava, the third largest city in the Czech Republic and nicknamed ‘the steel heart of the republic’, Antalya, Turkey’s biggest and most vibrant beach resort, as well as Istanbul, the country’s biggest city.

The Latvian seaside resort of Jurmala, which boasts an impressive 21-mile sandy beach, came in as the seventh cheapest option, whereas the more traditional resorts of Rhodes, a Greek island, and The Algarve came in 9th and 10th respectively.

The Bulgarian unit of TUI – the world's number one tourism business – expects to welcome more than 220,000 foreign tourists to the country by the end of the 2016 summer season.

TUI Bulgaria has recorded an increase in most of the major foreign tourist markets this year, with German tourists up 20%, those from Poland up 100% and UK tourists up 28%.
