Five million Brits plan August bank holiday getaway in UK

Sand BeachMore than five million Brits are planning to enjoy a break in the UK this August bank holiday weekend, according to a VisitEngland report.

The report revealed that 5.1 million Brits are putting plans in place for an overnight holiday trip in the UK over the August bank holiday weekend, which is set to generate £1.25 billion for the UK economy.

In England alone, 4.6 million overnight trips will be enjoyed, which are expected to generate £1.1 billion for the economy.

There have been a record number of Brits taking holidays at home this year, and that trend is set to continue over the bank holiday weekend as it proves a great opportunity to take a city or countryside break or visit the seaside, according to Patricia Yates, director of VisitBritain and VisitEngland.

The survey also highlights that an additional 3.6 million people are still unsure about whether they should enjoy an overnight holiday trip over the bank holiday weekend, with nearly 40% saying their choice is dependent on the weather and 20% saying they will decide at the last minute.

A record-breaking first four months of the year were recorded in England in terms of domestic travel. From January to April of this year, Brits took 11 million holiday trips in England, an 8% increase on the same period last year. They also pent £2.8 billion, a 22% rise year-on-year – both marked record levels for the period.

The reported figures also follow a strong showing in 2015, when a 7% rise was noted for spending and domestic holiday trips. It meant Brits took 43.7 million trips and spent £10.7 billion.

The amount of Brits enjoying short breaks (one to three nights) in England was up by 10% in 2015, whilst domestic seaside holidays increased by 7%, city breaks rose by 6% and countryside holidays climbed by 12%.
