Number of cars taken on holiday by ferry continues to rise

FerryThe Brexit vote has not stopped travellers from taking their cars on holiday via ferry, according to new figures from Discover Ferries.

Figures show that the number of cars taken on ferries in July increased by 4% to 1.14 million from 1.10 million in the same month in 2015.

Discover Ferries has revealed that the total number of cars taken on ferry trips between the UK and the continent increased by 2.9% to 540,000 in July.

The numbers have seen a gradual increase during the past three years, rising from 8.37 million in 2013 to 8.61 million in 2015.

France (54%), Belgium (13%), Netherlands (9%) and Germany (8%) were found to be the most popular destinations to visit by train or ferry from the UK in 2015.

Cars on ferry routes between the UK and Ireland also increased from 154,000 to 157,000 – a 1.5% increase. Overall, the car carryings for July on domestic routes were up by 6.5% from 416,000 to 442,000.

According to Discover Ferries Director Bill Gibbons, the signs are strong that 2016 will continue to see an increase in the number of people taking their car on holiday by sea, as more people are intent to avoid the hassle of airports and enjoy the convenience and flexibility of enjoying their own road trip.

There was also rise in the amount of people taking their cars on holiday to English and Scottish islands such as the Isle of Wight, Isle of Man, and western Scottish islands.

Mr Gibbons adds that all the signs from our ferry operators are that the sunny weather is encouraging more holidaymakers to get out and about in their cars on holiday and day trips.
