British Airways expands operations in China

ChinaBritish Airways has moved to expand its operations in China by agreeing a partnership with one of the countries most renowned airlines.

Following the agreement between BA and Shanghai’s China Eastern Airlines, passengers will now be able to connect to five key cities within the country.

The airline will sell China Eastern services to Kunming, Nanjing, Xi'an, Hangzhou and Chongqing.

After flying with BA from London Heathrow to Chengdu or Shanghai, passengers will be able to transfer on a single ticket.

As part of the deal, China Eastern’s passengers will have a similar arrangement and will now be able to connect from Heathrow to several UK destinations, including Newcastle, Manchester, Leeds-Bradford, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Belfast and Aberdeen.

Alex Cruz, BA’s Chairman and CEO, has expressed his delight at being able to offer customers the opportunity to fly to some of the great regional Chinese destinations.

It is hoped that the new partnership will be just the start and will generate more opportunities for companies located in the cities as it will be easier for them to travel and do business in person.

China Eastern is one of the country’s ‘big-three’ airlines and is seen to be a significant coup for British Airways as they continue to expand.

The partnership will be hugely significant for those looking to witness ancient culture and to explore, as the flights will lead them directly to the Terracotta Warriors in Xi’an, the Purple Mountain in Nanjing and the Porcelain Village in Chongqing.

Zeng Yongchao, China Eastern’s Executive Deputy Managing Director of Marketing and Sales, believes the deal marks the start of a new phase of the airline’s relationship with British Airways.

China Eastern are excited at being able to offer customers a more attractive route network, as the UK is an extremely popular destination for Chinese travellers.

Frequent flyers on both airlines will be able to earn miles on all the codeshare flights.
