UK the biggest European market for the Canary Islands

Canary IslandThe UK is the largest European market for the Canary Islands, who are on track to report a record number of visitors in 2016, according to the Regional Ministry of Tourism, Sport and Culture.

More than 14 million tourists from around the world are expected to spend their holidays in the Canary Islands – which consist of Tenerife, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro – in comparison to 13 million visitors who travelled to the islands in 2015.

The UK remains the largest European market for the islands, according to figures provided by the Canary Islands Statistics Institute (ISTAC) – the central statistical system and official center for investigation of the Government of the Canary Islands.

The number of visitors from the UK to the Canary Islands has increased dramatically over recent years, and in particular, the last few months.

Figures show that 4,279,392 British tourists travelled in 2015, a 4.2% increase on 2014, while the number of visitors from the UK from January until June this year increased by 18.4% in comparison to the same period in 2015.

According to data provided by ISTAC, of the 13,301,252 tourists who visited in 2015, only 1,490,710 came from the Spanish mainland – a figure that exceeded expectations by more than 500,000.

Mariate Lorenzo, regional minister for Tourism, Culture and Sports for the Canary Islands, is delighted to see that the initiatives, which include efforts to improve air connectivity, have proved to be successful.

There have also been campaigns in markets such as the UK, Italy and France in an attempt to attract more visitors to the island, which have resulted in exponential growth.
