Gatwick in line to record busiest summer holiday season ever
Gatwick Airport is set to have a record-breaking summer, with eight million passengers expected to pass through the airport, a 6.6% increase on 2015.
Throughout the summer holiday season the airport will see 50% more passengers with children, with 165,000 passengers expected to travel through during the summer’s busiest day, 14 August – also expected to be the airport’s busiest day on record.
Alongside the packed holiday period, the popularity of long-haul destinations continues to grow at Gatwick, with a 19% increase on summer 2015.
Destinations such as Orlando (17%), Tenerife (16%) and Faro (13%) have all seen increases in their popularity this summer while the top destinations at the airport include, Dubai, Cancun, New York, Toronto and Orlando.
Throughout the summer break more Gatwick staff will be on hand to be able to assist passengers at the airport’s free of charge children’s play areas, and with pushchairs to use on arrival and dedicated family security lanes.
According to Wayne Tomlinson, Gatwick Airport, Terminals Operations Manager, the airport has been hard at work to ensure those that are travelling through Gatwick enjoy an experience that is as hassle-free as possible.
The airport, which is the UK’s second largest, offers family entertainment and assistance throughout, in order to offer passengers the best start and finish to their time away.
Gatwick has also entered into the next stage in its £2.5 billion transformation project, by announcing 17 engineering and construction companies to take developments forward.
Those chosen to carry out the work will now contribute to key environmental targets in line with Gatwick’s ambition to become the UK’s most sustainable airport.
