Airbnb hosts set to accommodate over 55,000 fans during Olympic Games

RioAirbnb has revealed that hosts in Rio de Janeiro are set to accommodate more than 55,000 guest arrivals from a range of 110 different countries throughout the Olympic Games.

On average, Airbnb – the community-driven hospitality company and official alternative accommodation services supplier for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games – guests are paying around $170 per night (c. £130).

The leading group of guests using Airbnb during the Games are actually from Brazil, which is a change from what happened throughout the 2014 World Cup, where only 6% of bookings came from domestic travellers.

As it stands, Brazilian travellers make up 49% of bookings for Rio 2016, with Argentina, France, the United Kingdom and the United States making up the top five when it comes to fans traveling to the country.

Airbnb has been hard at work in order to be fully prepared for the arrival of thousands of fans, who will be travelling both short and long distances to witness the global event.

There has been a significant increase in the number of first-time users who have booked with Airbnb for the Games, with 60% of guests using the travel platform for the first time.

As it stands reservations are distributed across 54 neighbourhoods in Rio, with the vast majority of those booked in the most popular areas, which include Copacabana, Ipanema, Barra da Tijuca, Leblon and Botafogo.

However, reservations have also been made in neighbourhoods that are placed outside of the traditional tourist locations including, Del Castilho, Marechal Hermes and Meier.

As well as seeing an increase in the amount of first-time guests, the number of first-time hosts has also increased, with 62% having their first ever booking during the Games.

Airbnb, which began its operations in Brazil in 2012 with 3,500 listings, has seen significant growth over the last couple of years and now offers more than 90,000 listings in the entire country.
