Over £2 billion to be spent this by Brits on holiday extras this summer

SummerTravellers are set to spend up to £2.4 billion on extra holiday costs this summer, according to a new study conducted by YouGuv for mini-cab price comparison service, minicabit.

The survey asked respondents how much they spent on average on holiday extras, excluding holiday costs such as meals, accommodation and flights.

Just under half (49%) of people spend £100 on average per holiday, on extras such as shopping and airport transfers, increasing the costs of the average get-away by 10%.

More than a third of holiday makers (37%) spend up to £200 on extra costs per holiday, with those from London the biggest spenders, willing to spend £200 and £400 on additional costs.

Whilst 38% of respondents said that the costs of airport transfers alone reached up to £100, as findings suggest that the extra costs are due to holiday goers’ lack of planning.

However, it seems consumers are used to researching and booking flights in advance using comparison sites such as Skyscanner, in order to find the best deal for their holiday.

According to the survey, the unexpected costs contributed to an increase in overall stress of holiday makers, with 21% of respondents reporting that paying a fixed costs for their holiday would reduce holiday stress.

Also revealed, was that booking a taxi in advance for travel to and from the airport was also good for piece-of-mind and took great deal of stress out of travelling for nearly half (46%) of consumers.

According to Amer Hasan, Chief Executive of minicabit, people spend considerable time researching their flights and accommodation, and not on extras that they might spend money on during their holiday, making them considerably more expensive.

If you’re thinking of travelling abroad this year, be sure to organise your European travel insurance in advance.
