Manchester Airport offers direct flights to China

Manchester Airport has become the first UK hub outside of London to offer non-stop flights to Beijing.

The Hainan Airlines flight signals a major coup for the city, with experts suggesting the link to the world’s second biggest economy will be worth at least £250 million to the UK over the next ten years.

It was announced in October last year, by Xi Jinping, the President of the People’s Republic of China, that there will be four flights a week, which will open up new tourism and business opportunities.

From the £250 million that is expected to be made, £166 million is expected to be invested back into the north to boost trade, investment, tourism and jobs.

Universities are also set to benefit, as it provides an easy link for students and will make getting world-leading research into the commercial realm significantly easier.

It is thought 100,000 passengers make the journey to China from Manchester indirectly, but the new direct link it is expected to save £5 million every year for business passengers.

Hainan Airlines – China’s biggest privately-owned airline – has won many accolades, including numerous 2015 World Travel Awards.

According to Ken O’Toole, CEO of Manchester Airport, the flight with Hainan Airlines is clear evidence of the vital role that the airport plays economically, both on a national and regional scale.

Hainan Airlines expects that the passage between Manchester and Beijing will prove to be incredibly popular and beneficial for both parties.

The four flights will depart on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Monday, and will be served by an Airbus A330-300, consisting of 32 business class seats and 260 economy – return fares start at £487.

If you’re thinking of travelling abroad this year, be sure to organise your business travel insurance in advance.
