UK’s largest seawater pool reopens after £3 million refurbishment

poolTourists have been enjoying the sun in Cornwall at the Jubilee Pool Lido after it reopened following a £3 million refurbishment after it suffered serious damage during storms in February 2014.

Campaigns took place to raise funding to repair damaged walls, handrails, paving and install the pool with new drainage systems.

The pool first opened in 1935, and is the UK’s largest surviving seawater pool, with plans underway to heat part of the pool with geothermal energy in the future.

The refurbishment has been designed to cope with the ferocity that stormy Cornish seas can bring but also provide a pleasant environment for those visiting to swim in.

Following the damage in February 2014, the pool failed to open during the summer, until funding was found through the Coastal Communities Fund granted Cornwall Council £1.95 million as part of a restoration and repair project that totalled £2.94 million - match funding has also been provided by Cornwall Council, Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Local Enterprise Partnership’s Regional Growth Fund, Tempus Leisure, the Friends of Jubilee Pool, and Penzance Town Council

Work has now finally been completed, and those enjoying the sun in during the Bank Holiday weekend enjoyed the refurbished pool.

The pool had previously closed in 1992 due to it falling into disrepair, but a retired architect, John Clarke, created the Jubilee Pool Association to work alongside Penwith District Council to generate funding.

Looking out into Mount’s Bay on the seafront in Penzance, the Jubilee Pool is the one of Cornwall’s most famous landmarks, with its sweeping art deco curves it is perched on the edge of the Mediterranean.

The Jubilee Pool, which is owned and operated by Carrick Leisure Trust for Cornwall County Council, is open every summer from the start of June to mid-September, providing a fabulous venue for sunbathing, relaxing and of course swimming.

Tourists have tended to fall in love with the view across to St Michael’s Mount to the left, whilst to the right, the picturesque fishing of Newlyn.
