BA to fly from Gatwick to New York City

New YorkBrits looking to fly to New York from the south now have another option to choose from after British Airways announced a new direct flight from Gatwick.

The iconic British carrier joins budget rival Norwegian to become the second airline to connect direct. The new move is expected to be popular with those who find that getting to Heathrow adds time and expense to their journey – a train from Brighton takes half an hour to reach Gatwick as opposed to two hours and a change in the centre of London to get to Heathrow for example.

Three departures

BA’s new route will start in May next year and then the airline will become the only one to fly to NY from Gatwick, Heathrow and London City airports.

A Boeing 777 with three classes of tickets available will leave Gatwick at 4.40pm each day and arrive at JFK at 7.30pm local time. The return journey will see passengers depart JFK at 8pm and arrive at Gatwick just after ten o'clock the following morning.

Ticket prices will start at around £400 return.

Flagship Atlantic route

BA’s Managing Director at Gatwick, Lynne Embleton, said: “New York is British Airways’ flagship Atlantic route and will always be one of the most popular destinations for holidaymakers and business travelers alike.”

She went on to point out that the new route will also provide a convenient connection to New York for travelers coming from other European cities via the extensive short-haul network that services Gatwick.

The airline ran a Gatwick to New York service previously for more than 25 years before ending it in 2009. Virgin Atlantic has also ran the route in the past.

If you think the new connection might be just the ticket for your next trip across the Atlantic don't forget to book your Long-Haul Travel Insurance well in advance online.
