Government office gives advice for Brits going to Rio Olympics

OlympicsThe Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) is urging Brits bound for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro to take its advice on how to have a safe trip.

The Government office has issued a list of tips as a preparation checklist for those tourists heading out to one of the biggest sporting events of the year – which starts in less than 100 days.

Best possible experience

Olympic Gold Medallist Sprint Kayaker and ‘Stay Ahead of the Games’ ambassador Dr Tim Brabants MBE said: “Throughout my career I thrived off the support of the fans and that’s why I was so keen to be involved in this campaign – to help them get the best possible experience from the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“Today, as a practicing medical doctor, I would recommend all supporters check which vaccinations and medications they need before travel, especially if they’re planning on visiting some of Brazil’s more remote regions.”

Eight top tips

The FCO has given eight top tips to make sure travellers have an enjoyable and stress free trip.

Foreign and Commonwealth Office Minister James Duddridge said: “We are expecting thousands of Britons to make the journey to Rio for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and we want all of them to have a great time. There are careful preparations being made by our staff in Brazil to make sure our athletes and visitors are well supported, and all of those travelling should make sure they also prepare properly.”

The eight tips include ensuring that you obtain comprehensive travel insurance that covers you for everything you will be doing, and also making sure that you book your Games tickets and accommodation as far in advance as possible.

Other things to bear in mind are that your passport must be valid for a minimum period of 6 months from the date that you enter into Brazil. You should also be aware that Portuguese is the national language and that English isn’t as widely spoken there as you might think.
