Obama visit will bring social media bonanza says VisitBritain
US President Barack Obama's next visit to the UK will put the nation in the global social media spotlight as a tourist destination, says trade body VisitBritain.
With the most Twitter followers and Facebook fans of any world leader, President Obama is a social media political phenomenon – as his 73 million Twitter and 48 million Facebook followers would agree.
VisitBritain is asking Twitter users to use the hashtag #OMGB (Oh My Great Britain) on any tweets they make about the visit. The idea is to increase awareness of the organisation's marketing campaign this year, which aims to promote Britain as the 'Home of Amazing Moments'.
With the latest tourism figures showing that visitors from the US spent £2.3 billion in the UK during the first nine months of 2015 and with visits up 7% year on year, the United States remains Britain's most valuable inbound visitor market.
Joss Croft, VisitBritain's Marketing Director, said: “President Obama's visit and the accompanying international media exposure is a fantastic opportunity for us to show people that the UK is packed full of amazing experiences that visitors – including the President – can only get here.”
When he was last here in 2014, President Obama visited attractions such as Cardiff Castle and Stonehenge. This time round his own 'memorable moments' will include dining with The Queen at Windsor Castle and viewing close-up rare Shakespearean folios to mark The Bard’s 400th anniversary year.
“We hope he will share these experiences with his millions of social media followers and inspire more people to book a trip to come to the UK and discover their own amazing moments,” Croft added.
The new campaign was actually launched internationally in February but will only be officially launched across the UK next month. The scope of the campaign covers all the nations and regions of the UK in an effort to spread the economic benefits of tourism across the whole of the nation.
