75 million passengers used London Heathrow last year

2015 was another record breaking year for London Heathrow airport as more than 75 million passengers used the hub last year.

The figure represents a 2% year on year increase and saw more people than ever before use the major international airport situated just west of London.

More business

Heathrow keeps its crown as the busiest airport in the United Kingdom, and it is also the busiest airport in Europe by passenger traffic. The latest increase in passenger numbers follows a 1.4% rise in the previous year when totals hit 73.4 million passengers in 2014.

Last year the airport, which is the primary hub for British Airways and the main operating base for Virgin Atlantic, recorded a strong financial performance with revenue going up by 2.7% to hit £2,765 million.

The positive figures were boosted by a number of airlines including Garuda, Vietnam and Air China choosing to move their operations to Heathrow from its main rival Gatwick.

Excellent year

“It's been an excellent year for Heathrow,” said Chief executive of Heathrow John Holland-Kaye.

“As we approach our 70th anniversary, our colleagues are delivering the best service we've ever achieved to a record number of passengers.”

Heathrow is hoping to be given permission to build a controversial third runway which will increase capacity even more, although the move is being challenged by local residents while Gatwick is also offering itself up for expansion instead.

Holland-Kaye expressed confidence that the Government will agree with its Airports Commission over the coming summer and decide that expanding Heathrow is the best way forward – meeting environmental concerns in the process.

“We're also making strong progress on our environmental commitments by reducing emissions and noise, and another set of robust financial results underpins our plans to make Heathrow the most sustainable hub airport and the UK the best connected country in the world,” he explained.
