With British holidaymakers increasingly putting security concerns at the heart of their holiday making decision process, rental home specialist Interhome has now predicted that there will be a shortage of accommodation in what are considered by many to be ‘safe’ destinations.
The company claims that the current unpredictability surrounding certain regions and destinations – especially those that were previously firm favourites with Brits and other nationalities – is causing visitor numbers to decline.
This uncertainty, they say, is the reason for a 75% drop in bookings to Turkey last year, and why bookings to Egypt have dropped by 35% against 2015.
The company says that if demand continues to outstrip supply there may be a shortage of holiday accommodation available in those areas perceived as “safe” and that prices will be at a “considerable high”.
Already this year, bookings to Spain and Italy are up by 30% and 25% respectively, and Interhome are advising customers to book their European summer holidays as far in advance as possible. They also reveal that bookings for Florida and the Caribbean are also “performing well”.
Thijs van Oss, Interhome's Regional Director for Northern Europe, commented: “We're seeing high demand for our villas and apartments across southern Europe, with Spain and Italy being particularly popular.”
Van Oss went on to explain that although his company’s staff were working hard to expand capacities in these destinations a shortage was to be expected.
“We therefore recommend British holidaymakers book early, as waiting until last minute season may lead to disappointment,” Van Oss advised.
For bargain hunting Brits the news might not be all bad, as Van Oss also suggested that there would be very cheap offers coming in for Turkey, Tunisia and Egypt on the market, although flight capacity reductions may have a further negative impact for those countries.
